Prearranged Free Sparring Format

Prearranged Free Sparring (yak-so- cha-yu mat-so-gi) is practiced as the name denotes, under prearranged conditions with various assumptions, for example the number of steps to be taken, the targets to be attacked and the attacking tool to be used are agreed upon, beforehand between the students.  Between eight and twelve attacks from both attacker and defender are required.

Both students begin by coming to attention, bow, then stepping left into a parallel ready stance.  Student One ki-haps, then Student Two ki-haps, Student One then begins the attack.  Attacks must alternate as the following; Student One hand attack, Student Two defends and counters with a hand technique, Student One defends and counters with a foot attack, Student Two defends and counters with a foot attack. The prearrange Free Sparring may begin with either a hand or a foot attack but then must alternate as described above.

Correct stances must be used and maintained during the entire Prearranged Free Sparring.  Evasions, dodges or ducks may be used once by each student during the series of attacks and blocks.

Standard Pre-Arranged Free Sparring

The following is for 3rd Gup Blue and 2nd Gup Red Belts.  All upper ranks should know this standard Pre-Arranged Free Sparring in order to be ready to help lower ranks to learn it and if needed, to be a partner at testing.  We recommend all 3rd Gups learn Part  A and 2nd Gup Red Belts learn Part B.  These may also be practiced without a partner.  A special thanks to Mr. Shane Webster, I Dan for helping me put this routine together and putting it in written form so everyone can have it available to them.
